Junk Drawer: Micro-Heroes – Old Template
Oct 16th
I got a folder on my server called “zzzfiles” which I use to store a bunch of junk I don’t know what to do with but don’t necessarily want to delete either. It occurred to me today I can just as easily store most of its content on my blog, thereby streamlining my file keeping and allowing the files themselves to (however briefly) see the light of day.
So let’s start with the Micro-Heroes directory. Back when sometime, I used to actively post at ComicBoards.com, and even moderated one or three of their boards. During that time, the Micro-Hero craze kicked in and I joined in along with everyone else. I won’t get into the whole history, but you can read about it here. I will mention that the part about storTroopers threatening a lawsuit was my fault, because I created a Webring for Micro-Heroes. I think all they were really asking for us to do was drop the Webring, but everyone freaked out and dropped the original template all together. Oh well.
The following are Micro-Heroes I created, that I managed to keep, in the old template style. I like the old template much better, way more cookie-cutter than the new stuff. I think there were a lot more of the old template that I lost, especially in the Green Lantern department. At one point I was trying to make a Micro-Hero for every known Green Lantern, but now I don’t have any! I wonder if someone out there saved them?

Temp From Chiswick

I finally got through seasons 3 and 4 of Doctor Who, and like the other seasons (or “series” if you want some UK authenticity) it was pretty good. Season 3 seemed somewhat repetitive and I felt bad for old Martha Jones, as she had to replace Rose, which no fan is going to embrace. She was cool, and the prettiest companion I’ve watched so far (also the second companion, so her competition isn’t steep) but I didn’t like her pine for the Doctor, and they didn’t really play up the aspects of her I did like, namely that she was a doctor herself. As I’ve never watched Classic Who, I could be wrong, but I think the “love” stuff is a new idea, and I’m kind of bored of it. It was okay with Rose, The Doctor just came out of a war, he was alone, she was special, yadda yadda, but let’s move on now. He fell in love again in the Christmas Special. Geezums, he must have a thing for blonds!
Season 4 was very entertaining and I blame Donna Noble for most of it. Now that’s a companion. Someone who doesn’t take the Doctor’s $(@& (or anybody’s for that matter). But not only was she funny and strong willed, there was lots of heart in her character. One minute she’s cracking wise, the next she’s suffering immensely, and you could really feel it. As fun as it is the be The Doctor’s companion, it’s also tough, and Donna Noble really showed us that. And no love stuff! Heck, she didn’t even find him attractive! I dug that. Too bad it ended for her the way it did, but I guess it could have been worse. At least she seemed happy. Favorite line: “This isn’t the real me. This isn’t my body. But I’ve been dieting!”
I gotta say, as franchise characters go, it doesn’t get more brilliant than Doctor Who, a guy who travels space and time and who can turn into a completely different actor every time he “dies” is a great way to keep a series going forever. You can change anything and everything whenever you want, except that police box.
I also gotta say that this new series has a better and better cliffhanger every season. I never know how they’ll top themselves, but they always do! 1) Regeneration, 2) Daleks vs Cybermen, 3) Return of the Master, 4) Return of Davros and every supporting character/companion of the new show. What to do for season 5?
I started watching old school Who this morning. It’s kinda slow, but the segments are short so I can take it in small intervals. It’s not that bad considering its age. There are very few film cuts, it seems more like a stage play, which is kind of cool. Hartnell’s Doctor is much different than Tennant’s, but I expected that. He looks grouchy and he is grouchy, so it works out. It’s interesting to see how it all began. I think I’ll throw in an old Doctor Who DVD on my Netflix queue every so often, and maybe eventually catch up with the rest of the Whovians.
